A-Eno-Acid’s The Last Jack Is Acid Built to Hold, Not Lift

Share

Filter closed, hats dry, a single 303 line circling the same three notes. That is the mood across The Last Jack, A-Eno-Acid’s first full-length LP: late-1980s Chicago acid house played dark, with the pressure held rather than released and the mood set early.

In a set it works as a hold rather than a lift. The later cuts drift toward early-1990s Detroit, and a couple step back into home-listening acid and house, so the record never settles into one gear. It closes on an ambient 303 with the drums pulled right back, the quietest thing here.

Spare, patient, and built to sit under a mix rather than over it. The strongest thing about it is how little it needs to do.
