Eight unreleased tracks. Seven years of ideas. One unmistakable UK electronic vision.
Scarper’s new release, Off-Cuts (2014–2021), is a reminder that some of the most rewarding music is not always created for the spotlight. Sometimes it lives quietly in project folders, waiting for the right moment to be rediscovered.
The UK-based producer, known for his emotionally charged blend of house, techno and electronica, now shares eight previously unreleased tracks from a defining era in his career. Curated from material created between 2014 and 2021, the record revisits the creative period surrounding his universally acclaimed debut album Warmer Squares and 2020’s infectious club weapon, “E-Funk.”
But make no mistake: this is not a collection of half-finished fragments. Off-Cuts (2014–2021) is a fully realised snapshot of Scarper’s world — immersive, melodic, acid-fuelled, soulful and built with a deep understanding of the dancefloor.
The album begins with “Skynet,” a striking opening statement powered by emotive chord progressions and widescreen electronic drama. Its atmosphere is both uplifting and introspective, setting the tone for a release that values feeling as much as function.
Then comes “Steppe,” where Scarper brings in playful acid squelches, elastic grooves and a restless sense of movement. It is the kind of track that feels equally at home in a smoke-filled basement or blasted through headphones at 2am. Elsewhere, “Halocline” reveals another side of the artist’s palette, introducing beautiful string arrangements and a cinematic delicacy that elevates the release beyond the usual club-focused framework.
Together, these tracks reflect the broad musical scope that Scarper has developed throughout his career. He can create a euphoric melodic moment one minute and a rough-edged underground workout the next — always without losing the personality that makes his productions instantly recognisable.
Speaking on the project, Scarper says:
“I realised I had quite a few demos, jams & ideas on my laptop from that period, some of which were decent enough to polish up & get out into the world. It’s a snapshot of where I was musically at the time, so I thought I’d package them together as a retrospective rather than a proper release — giving people something to enjoy while I crack on with the next project.”
This no-frills honesty is central to the appeal of Off-Cuts (2014–2021). Scarper has not attempted to rewrite history or package the record as something it is not. Instead, he has taken music from his past and treated it with the attention it deserves — allowing listeners to hear the foundations, experiments and inspirations behind a crucial artistic period.
Scarper’s place within the electronic underground has been earned through consistency rather than hype. His output has won support from influential artists including Orbital, Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig, while radio stations such as Rinse FM, Sub FM and BBC 6 Music have championed his records. Leading dance music publications, including Mixmag, DJ Mag and XLR8R, have also recognised his ability to move effortlessly between timeless influences and contemporary production.
Releasing largely through his own Plexus Records, Scarper remains a true independent — a producer following instinct, not formulas. That freedom is audible throughout Off-Cuts (2014–2021), a release that captures the energy of classic electronic music while keeping its eyes fixed firmly on what comes next.
With “E-Funk” currently enjoying a renewed wave of attention through a new physical release, Off-Cuts (2014–2021) is the perfect opportunity to explore the deeper corners of Scarper’s catalogue.
The archive is open. The tracks are alive. And Scarper is already moving forward.
